U9 Tournament Rules

The first rule of Hockey is have fun! However, there are a few other rules we have to make everyone aware of. 

We encourage all participants, coaches, and spectators to familiarize themselves with the Hockey Calgary Fair Play Code. This valuable resource can be found on the Hockey Calgary website, and it provides guidance on how we can all contribute to a respectful and enjoyable hockey community.

We kindly request that spectators refrain from entering restricted areas such as the timebox, penalty box, and player's benches. These areas are designated for coaches and tournament personnel only. Your cooperation will help us ensure smooth operations during the event.

Our tournament will adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the governing body of zone 9 which is described as Hockey Calgary. 

Game Play Format

​​Each team will play a total of 4 games. All games are 60 minutes in length. The default tournament format will be a ¾ ice & cross ice model as detailed below, No score is kept, and therefore there are no winners or losers determined throughout the event. 

3 Mins - Warm Up 

15 Mins run time – Period #1 

1 Min – Intermission 

15 Mins run time – Period #2 

1 Min – Intermission 

15 Mins run time – Period #3 

3 Mins – Shake hands/move boards

Roster Split

Games will be played with 3 lines separated into equal abilities. If coaches wish to tier rosters to A/B/C format that must be agreed to with the other team prior to the game start. 

Player groupings of 5 or 6 will play 3 total periods. Example: 

▪ Player group 1: cross ice, ¾ ice, ¾ ice 

▪ Player group 2: ¾ ice, cross ice, ¾ ice 

▪ Player group 3: ¾ ice, ¾ ice, cross ice

Players on the Ice

  • 5v5

Face-offs

  • Face-off to start each period

  • Face-off after each goal

Officials

  • Both Referees will work on the Three-Quarter game

Positions

  • Coaches are permitted to identify Defense/Forwards for the Three-Quarter game.

Penalties

  • On a penalty call, the official will raise their arm and blow the whistle immediately signaling a penalty has been called. The official will instruct the player to proceed to their bench and exit the playing area.

  • The official will conduct a change in possession and signal to the offending team to back off 3 meters. A new player will replace the penalized player and play will continue at 5v5. At the conclusion of the shift, the player who replaced the infracting player will remain on the ice for another shift.

  • Face-off to start each period

Officials

  • Both Referees will work on the Three-Quarter game

Positions

  • Coaches in cross-ice game must wear skates and a helmet and should officiate/manage ice.

Players Bench

  • 1 bumper in each corner of the Cross Ice Game to act as a bench/divider for players to stand behind or sit on.

Modified Full Ice Game Play

NOTE: A modified full ice game must be agreed to by both teams/coaches/managers AND communicated to tournament organizers at least one week ahead time.

 

If a team does not have the capacity/intention to play full ice OR a full ice game is not agreed to by both sides, the default format will be the 3⁄4 & cross ice model above.

 

Time/Periods (60 Minute Ice Slot)

  • 3 Mins - Warm Up

  • 15 Mins run time – Period #1

  • 1 Min – Intermission

  • 15 Mins run time – Period #2

  • 1 Min – Intermission

  • 15 Mins run time – Period #3

  • 3 Mins – Shake hands

 

Equipment/Rules

  • 5v5 plus a goaltender

  • Full size nets

  • Black pucks

  • Offsides

  • Shifts will be 1.5 minutes (90 seconds) in length.

  • When the buzzer/whistle sounds, players must relinquish control of the puck immediately and vacate the ice. The new players enter onto the ice surface immediately.

  • Penalties will be called (player will go to penalty box on a called penalty, however teams will not play shorthanded)

  • Faceoffs will occur at the beginning of each period, after offsides, after a goal is scored, or a penalty is called.

 

Modifications:

  • No icing

  • No score posted

  • Goalies/teams stay at the same end for each period

  • Teams will not play shorthanded if a penalty is called

Game Sheets & Scoring

While there are no official scores shown on a scoreboard, an internal score for each half-ice game will be kept for reseeding purposes. Novice specific games sheets will be used in order to track all players who participate in the game as well as to tally the score, both Home and away teams will need to arrange scoresheets as per the Hockey Calgary Community Hockey Game play Guidelines 2023-24 doc.

 

When the puck enters the goal, the official will blow the whistle and signal a goal, retrieving the puck from the net and allow the team that was scored on to take possession of the puck. The team that scored will back off 3 meters.
